James Ransone, known for his role as Ziggy Sobotka in the popular TV series “The Wire,” passed away at the age of 46. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s office confirmed that Ransone died by suicide last Friday.
Apart from his portrayal of Sobotka, a character involved in organized crime, on “The Wire,” Ransone also featured in TV series like “Bosch,” “Poker Face,” and “Generation Kill,” a miniseries set in Baghdad in 2003.
Ransone’s work extended to the horror genre with films such as “It: Chapter Two,” “The Black Phone,” “Black Phone 2,” and the “Sinister” series. In a 2016 Interview magazine feature, Ransone discussed his unconventional path to acting, which included dropping out of film school and struggling with addiction.
Following Ransone’s tragic death, his wife, Jamie McPhee, and friends shared heartfelt messages on social media. A GoFundMe campaign has been initiated to support Ransone’s family.
Representatives of Ransone were not immediately available for comment when contacted by the Associated Press. If you or someone you know needs help, several crisis helplines and resources are available for support.
