“Crosby Reflects on Iconic 2010 Golden Goal”

Many individuals recall the memorable moment when Jarome Iginla was urged to pass the puck, the exhilaration that ensued when the young star scored, and the ensuing celebrations.

The nation erupted when Sidney Crosby, then 22 years old, netted the overtime goal at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. Nearly 16 years later, Crosby reflects on this gold-winning event on home soil as one of the highlights in his illustrious hockey career.

Crosby vividly recollects the heartbreak when the Canadian team, just seconds away from a regulation victory, allowed the American forward Zach Parise to score the tying goal. The feeling of being so close to fulfilling his childhood dreams in Cole Harbour, N.S., only to see them slip away will likely stay with him forever.

Prior to the overtime period, the Canadian players were unsettled, except for seasoned defenseman Scott Niedermayer, who remained composed and unwavering in his team’s abilities. Head coach Mike Babcock also exuded confidence, urging someone to step up and be the hero in overtime.

For Crosby, devastation turned into determination and intensity. Being on home turf, they couldn’t afford to let the opportunity slip away, and Crosby was prepared to rise to the occasion.

“That confidence and collective belief were palpable as we headed into overtime,” Crosby shared in an exclusive interview with CBC Olympics host Ariel Helwani. “Even as a young player, I could sense it, and it was incredible to be part of that and then go out there and get the job done.”

Host Ariel Helwani asks golden goal scorer Sidney Crosby about if there is anything that the public does not know about his overtime goal at the Vancouver 2010 men’s hockey final.

Now at 38, Crosby has another shot at creating an Olympic magic moment in Italy this February. Recently, Lululemon unveiled the attire for athletes at the 2026 Milano-Cortina Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, and Crosby was designated as a Team Canada ambassador.

When the Canadian men kick off against the Czech Republic on Feb. 12, it’s expected that Crosby will wear the captain’s C on his jersey. Additionally, there’s speculation that he might lead Canada’s flag at the opening ceremony.
