Ruth Jones McVeigh, one of the founders of Canada’s renowned Mariposa Folk Festival, has passed away at the age of 99 in Ottawa. She played a significant role in establishing the enduring annual music festival, which has become one of the longest-running folk festivals in North America despite facing various challenges over the years.

Since its inception in 1961, the Mariposa Folk Festival has hosted iconic artists such as Gordon Lightfoot, Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, and Bob Dylan. The festival, known for its community-oriented approach, has garnered widespread recognition and attendance over the years, thanks in large part to Jones McVeigh’s dedication.

Jones McVeigh, a native of Halifax with a background in journalism, relocated to Ontario with her family and later settled in Orillia. Her passion for folk music and her experiences attending music festivals in Toronto inspired her to launch the Mariposa Folk Festival in Orillia.

Despite facing challenges such as changing locations and financial difficulties, Jones McVeigh’s determination kept the festival alive. Over the years, Mariposa has featured a diverse lineup of artists, from local talents like Ian & Sylvia and Gordon Lightfoot to international stars like Pete Seeger, Joan Baez, and Emmylou Harris.

Jones McVeigh’s commitment to nurturing young talent was evident throughout her involvement with the festival. She was instrumental in providing opportunities for emerging artists, such as country folk singer-songwriter Samantha Windover, who credits Jones McVeigh for her support and encouragement.

In recognition of her contributions, Jones McVeigh was inducted into the Mariposa Folk Festival Hall of Fame in 2005. Her legacy lives on through the festival’s continued success and the online archive dedicated to preserving its history.
