A tragic incident occurred in midtown Toronto on Wednesday morning, resulting in the death of a woman who was struck by two vehicles. The woman, initially reported to be around 80 years old by Toronto Police Service (TPS), was later identified as a 70-year-old pedestrian. The fatal accident took place on Eglinton Avenue E. near Dunfield Avenue as the woman was crossing the street after grocery shopping.
According to Deputy Inspector Scott Bradbury of TPS, the woman was hit twice by separate vehicles traveling in opposite directions along Eglinton Avenue E. at around 7:20 a.m. Both vehicles fled the scene following the collision, despite emergency life-saving efforts by paramedics.
Following the incident, a 48-year-old man from Toronto turned himself in and has been charged with dangerous operation of a conveyance causing death and leaving an accident scene causing death. The man was reportedly driving a white Hyundai Venue at the time of the tragic event. Authorities are still searching for a second unidentified suspect who was driving the other vehicle involved.
Eglinton Avenue E. was temporarily closed to both vehicular and pedestrian traffic between Yonge Street and Lillian Street but has since reopened. Residents and officials have expressed shock and sadness over the incident, with calls for enhanced road safety measures in the area.
Coun. Josh Matlow of Toronto-St. Paul’s highlighted the need for more information before implementing changes to prevent such incidents in the future. Witnesses and anyone with relevant information or footage of the accident are urged to contact the police for assistance in the ongoing investigation.
Local community members, including Romahlio Williams and Diego Maytorena, expressed disbelief at the hit-and-run nature of the incident and emphasized the importance of responsible behavior in such situations. Inspector Bradbury described the tragedy as a sorrowful conclusion to the year and urged anyone involved to come forward and cooperate with the authorities.
