This week, a water main break occurred just as Shawn Kearns was finishing up at Greenbriar Market and Refillery on Bowness Road towards the end of December. Kearns expressed relief at narrowly avoiding the impact of the break. The store faced an estimated $30,000 loss in sales due to decreased customer traffic during the incident in 2024. Kearns and the co-owner plan to continue operations at their Crossroads Market location.
Businesses in affected areas, including parts of Point McKay, West Hillhurst, Parkdale, and Montgomery, are experiencing a sense of déjà vu from the challenges faced during the previous water main break. With the current boil-water advisory in place, extra precautions are necessary, such as boiling water before use, leading to inconveniences for establishments and customers alike.
Road closures have raised concerns among business owners about potential deterrence of customers. Notably, establishments like NOtaBLE The Steakhouse have taken to social media to reassure patrons of their operational status and provide directions for access.
Annie Tran, owner of Now Nails and Spa, faced uncertainties following the break as the salon’s location on the closed 16th Avenue N.W. posed accessibility issues for clients. Compliance with Alberta Health Services guidelines mandating the boiling of water for certain services added to the operational challenges. Tran mentioned the possibility of temporarily discontinuing water-intensive services like pedicures if the advisory persists.
Co-owner Paul Hopfner of Abbey’s Creations Ice Cream reflected on the disruption caused by the break, expressing gratitude for the timing not coinciding with peak ice cream season. However, he highlighted the adverse impact on the business and the potential for long-term repercussions on operations in Montgomery.
Mayor Jeromy Farkas urged Calgarians to support affected businesses during the city’s update on the water main break, emphasizing the need for community assistance. While the city is exploring avenues to aid businesses, including clear timelines for recovery, no immediate financial support commitments have been made. Kearns, though no longer in the area, echoed the call for city assistance to aid struggling businesses in the affected zones.
