A severe dust storm swept through Libya on Tuesday, causing low visibility and leading to the temporary closure of flights at Benghazi and Tripoli’s international airports.
Libya, situated in the Sahara Desert, frequently experiences dust storms, with these events typically occurring during the spring months, reaching their peak in April. These storms are produced when strong winds from thunderstorms lift dry soil particles, carrying dust and sand over long distances in the air.
The city of Benghazi, located on the eastern coast and the most heavily impacted area by the storm, was enveloped in a thick orange haze. The surreal scenes, reminiscent of the movie “Dune,” showcased the city’s transformation during the storm.
Images captured during the dust storm depicted individuals taking photos amidst the orange sky, with landmarks and landscapes cloaked in the dusty atmosphere. The storm’s effects were visible in various parts of the city, creating an eerie and captivating spectacle for residents and onlookers.
