The Town of Gander has unveiled its budget plans for the upcoming year, focusing on balancing affordability while aiming to attract new residents to the area.

With a budget of $24,167,219 for 2026, the town will be investing in various areas including recreation, emergency preparedness, and transportation. According to Coun. Jim Lidstone, the town experienced a significant increase in property assessment values, providing a financial boost.

The rise in property values will lead to a natural increase in taxation, allowing the town to address various issues. Lidstone mentioned that they were able to lower residential and commercial mill rates to mitigate the impact on residents and businesses.

Furthermore, funds have been allocated for a remote monitoring system to predict potential infrastructure problems in advance, ultimately saving the town money. This SCADA monitoring system will alert authorities about any emerging issues related to water and wastewater systems.

Lidstone emphasized the town’s commitment to balancing investments with long-term affordability, focusing on ensuring the community’s sustainability and future growth.

In terms of recreational enhancements, Gander is working on projects such as a skateboard park, replacing the Cobb’s Pond Bridge, and establishing a pickleball court. These additions will further solidify Gander’s reputation as a sporting hub.

Additionally, the town is dedicating $100,000 towards the next phase of transit system planning and is enhancing emergency response capabilities by upgrading fire protection gear and equipment to safeguard homes from potential wildfires in residential areas.
