In these uncertain times, many of us are facing feelings of anxiety about our own futures and the world at large. Adapting to new routines and managing a flood of information can be overwhelming, leading to anxious thoughts and negative emotions. Anxiety can also manifest physically.
To help combat anxiety, we sought advice from two experts: Dr. Ana Bodnar, a clinical psychologist and yoga teacher, and Pradeep Kumar, a former physician specializing in mind-body medicine and meditation. They shared simple yet effective techniques to alleviate anxiety in the moment.
One key approach is thought-interruption practices. According to Bodnar, rumination, or repetitive thoughts, often accompanies anxiety. Positive self-talk can help break this cycle, bringing the mind back to reality in a compassionate way. Kumar emphasizes the importance of self-talk in disrupting anxious thought patterns and staying present.
The body scan technique, as explained by Bodnar, shifts focus from thoughts to physical sensations, grounding the mind in the present moment. This method involves sensory awareness, deep breathing, and a systematic scan of the body starting from the feet.
Repeating a mantra is another strategy to divert attention from anxious thoughts. Kumar highlights how mantras or positive phrases can activate the relaxation response, reducing stress and anxiety by calming the nervous system.
Mindful action, which involves being fully present and engaged in daily activities, can also help alleviate anxiety. Bodnar recommends practicing mindfulness in various settings, such as eating mindfully or paying attention to the surroundings.
Breathing exercises play a crucial role in managing anxiety. Deep breathing techniques, like slow, deep breathing or the box breath method, can induce relaxation by regulating breath patterns and calming the mind.
Movement practices, such as nature walks or muscle relaxation exercises, offer physical outlets to release pent-up energy associated with anxiety. Bodnar suggests engaging in physical activities to disrupt anxious patterns and restore balance.
Incorporating these self-soothing strategies into daily routines can help break the cycle of anxious thoughts quickly and promote overall well-being.
