As Canada prepares for a review of its crucial free trade agreement with the United States next year, Unifor national president Lana Payne emphasizes the importance of securing a favorable deal. Payne expresses concern over some voices in the business sector advocating for swift trade agreements.

She warns against hastily entering into deals at any cost, stressing that this approach is detrimental to negotiations. Canada, she asserts, must recognize its bargaining power in these discussions. Prime Minister Mark Carney recently announced that formal discussions with the U.S. to review the free trade agreement will commence in January.

The upcoming review of the Canada-U.S.-Mexico trade deal, known as CUSMA, will focus on addressing issues related to Canadian policies on dairy products, alcohol, and digital services, according to Washington’s trade representative. Additionally, Canada is engaging in discussions with the U.S. concerning sectoral tariffs that have disproportionately impacted industries such as autos, forestry, and metal production.

Payne underscores the importance of taking a strong stance and not allowing tariffs to be normalized in any way. She advocates for Canada to stand firm and let the pressure from tariffs’ negative effects build naturally. Payne emphasizes the need to avoid rushing into unfavorable agreements.

Pointing to the current economic challenges in the U.S., Payne highlights the declining manufacturing jobs, new hires, and economic impacts on various sectors. She believes that these internal pressures in the U.S. put Canada in a better position for negotiations.

While acknowledging the complexities of the ongoing talks, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer has raised concerns about Canada’s dairy market access and certain dairy exports. In response, Carney reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to safeguarding agricultural supply management while remaining open to sector-specific deals like forestry.

Given the unpredictable nature of President Trump, Payne stresses the importance of Canada being prepared for various scenarios, including the potential withdrawal of the U.S. from the trade agreement. She asserts that Canada should not succumb to unfavorable terms under threats but be ready to respond judiciously.

The negotiations remain challenging, with Canada aiming to secure a fair and beneficial outcome for both countries without compromising its interests.
