“Passengers’ Luggage Woes: Chaos on WestJet’s New Year’s Day Flight”

Darren Stoppler’s anticipated New Year’s Day journey to Puerto Vallarta turned into a frustrating experience when his flight was delayed for two hours and his luggage went missing. While onboard the WestJet aircraft with his wife and sister, passengers were informed of a weight problem necessitating the removal of bags. It wasn’t until the plane landed in Mexico that the extent of the issue became evident, with over 70 bags left behind.

Despite having paid for premium seats with priority luggage, Stoppler found himself without his belongings. WestJet instructed him to file a baggage claim, assuring him that his luggage would arrive the following day. However, after tracking the Airtag he had placed in his bag, he discovered his luggage was not in Puerto Vallarta but had made its way to Texas and then Cancun.

Facing four days of frustrating interactions with WestJet, including long wait times on calls and website navigation challenges, Stoppler expressed his disappointment with the lack of assistance. WestJet offered him a meager $100 for the delayed luggage, leaving him reliant on borrowed essentials from his brother during his stay.

Monitoring WestJet’s online luggage tracker yielded no updates until his wife and sister intervened at the airport, where they had gone to collect other delayed luggage. With the help of a WestJet agent, it was confirmed that Stoppler’s luggage was in Cancun, eventually making its way to Toronto before reaching Puerto Vallarta.

Stoppler, a frequent traveler to Mexico for 25 years, described this incident as his worst experience ever. He wasn’t alone in his plight, as another WestJet passenger, Stephanie Edwards, and her husband also faced luggage issues on their flight from Regina to Puerto Vallarta.

Edwards and Franklin, who believed they had followed all procedures correctly, were shocked to discover that their bags had been left behind in Regina. Despite the lack of communication from WestJet crew regarding the luggage removal, the couple only learned about the situation upon reaching the baggage claim in Mexico.

After a frustrating search and interaction with WestJet staff, Edwards finally located her bag at the Puerto Vallarta airport, aided by a friend’s sighting and photo confirmation. The incident has severely affected her trust in WestJet, emphasizing the essential role of luggage in travelers’ journeys and the impact of such mishaps on passengers’ confidence in airlines.

In response to the baggage issues on the Jan. 1 flight, WestJet attributed the problem to various factors, including luggage volume, weight restrictions, and runway conditions. The airline expressed regret for the inconvenience caused and advised affected passengers to file claims on its website for resolution.
