Former Toronto FC captain Michael Bradley has been appointed as the head coach of the New York Red Bulls, a move he described as an “incredible opportunity.” Bradley takes over from Sandro Schwarz, who was let go in late October after two seasons in charge.
The Red Bulls missed the playoffs this season after a 15-year streak, finishing 10th in the Eastern Conference with a record of 12-15-7. In the previous year, the team reached the MLS Cup final but lost to the Los Angeles Galaxy.
Bradley, aged 38, retired as a player in 2023 after a decade with Toronto FC. Following a brief stint as an assistant coach at Norway’s Stabaek under his father Bob Bradley in 2024, he took charge of the Red Bulls reserve team in June.
Under Bradley’s guidance, the Red Bulls II clinched the MLS Next Pro Cup title in November with a penalty shootout victory over the Colorado Rapids 2 following a 3-3 draw in extra time. Subsequently, he was promoted to lead the Red Bulls first team on December 15, joining forces with New York sporting director Julian de Guzman, a former TFC player and Canada captain.
Bradley expressed his excitement at the press conference, stating that becoming the head coach was a goal he had been working towards since joining the club six months ago. He emphasized his readiness to take on the new role and his determination to lead the team to success.
With a decorated playing career that included stints in various European leagues and a successful tenure with Toronto FC, Bradley brings a wealth of experience and leadership to his coaching role. Both Bradley and de Guzman highlighted their ambition to instill a winning culture within the team, aiming for more than just making the playoffs. They emphasized the importance of playing attractive football and setting high standards for the team’s performance.
Bradley outlined his vision for the team, focusing on youth, speed, athleticism, and dynamism. The Red Bulls have already made changes to the squad, parting ways with some players and bringing in new talent to bolster the team’s roster.
Despite his relatively short coaching experience, Bradley’s background as a seasoned player known for his organizational skills and leadership qualities positions him well to guide the team effectively. He emphasized his commitment to ensuring that every player performs at their best, reflecting on his approach to leadership throughout his career.
