Three individuals remained missing amid uncontrollable wildfires sweeping through the state of Victoria in Australia, causing devastation to homes and vast areas of bushland, officials confirmed on Friday. Victoria’s north was expected to face destructive winds and temperatures reaching up to 46 degrees Celsius.

According to Victoria Premier Jacinda Allen, the state was encountering “one of the most perilous fire occurrences in recent years.” A fire near Longwood has scorched over 35,000 hectares of bushland, while another blaze near Walwa has expanded to around 20,000 hectares. These fires ignited on Wednesday during a severe summer heatwave in southern Australia.

Meteorologists have drawn parallels with 2019 conditions, a year marked by extensive bushfires that ravaged southeastern Australia, claiming 33 lives in what became known as the Black Summer.

An analysis released by Climate Central revealed that human-induced climate change significantly increased the likelihood of extreme heat in many Australian regions. Friday’s fire risk level was classified as “catastrophic,” the highest ranking, with both Longwood and Walwa fires posing substantial threats to life and property.

The Walwa fire has generated its atmospheric system, producing a pyrocumulonimbus cloud that triggered lightning and thunder. Premier Allen emphasized that these extreme conditions had intensified, leading to the fires generating their weather, sparking new blazes through lightning strikes and strong winds forecasted for the day.

Residents in numerous nearby towns were instructed to evacuate, with approximately 450 schools in Victoria closed and several regional train services suspended. A statewide total fire ban was enforced on Friday.

Meanwhile, New Zealand’s weather service, MetService, cautioned of record-high temperatures over the weekend as the heatwave traverses the Tasman Sea. Heat alerts have been issued for sections of the eastern coastline of New Zealand and the northern regions of the South Island.
