Paralympian Mark Arendz, a celebrated athlete from Prince Edward Island, is currently in Germany for a Para World Cup event. Despite his international commitments, residents might spot him in Island supermarkets. Arendz is prominently featured on Cheerios boxes as part of a new General Mills campaign honoring Canadian athletes heading to the 2026 Paralympic and Olympic Games in Milano-Cortina, Italy.
Expressing his gratitude, Arendz shared with CBC’s Island Morning the significance of being showcased on breakfast and snack tables across Canada. Having lost his left arm in a childhood farming accident, Arendz has amassed an impressive collection of 12 Paralympic medals, including two golds, in biathlon and cross-country skiing.
For Arendz, such campaigns hold immense value as they provide a platform for children to engage in discussions about sports and the personal journeys of athletes. He emphasized the importance of passing on his experiences, knowledge, and wisdom to inspire the next generation towards success and achievement.
As he gears up for his fifth Paralympic Games in March, the Para-Nordic skier from Hartsville, P.E.I., emphasized the role of past experiences in enhancing his readiness for the upcoming competition. Arendz cited the diverse lessons learned from previous Games and the evolving dynamics of each new event as crucial factors in his preparation process.
At 35 years old, Arendz acknowledged that he may be approaching the later stages of his athletic career. However, he remains committed to continuous self-improvement, constantly seeking ways to enhance his performance on the snow and at the shooting range. With a focus on speed for the upcoming 2026 Games, Arendz expressed his determination to deliver his best performance on the day of the race.
The Milano Cortina 2026 Paralympics, scheduled from March 6 to 15, will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Winter Paralympics. Over 600 athletes will compete across six sports, including alpine skiing, biathlon, cross-country skiing, ice hockey, snowboard, and wheelchair curling, in 79 medal events.
As Arendz continues his preparations for the prestigious event, his dedication and perseverance serve as an inspiration to aspiring athletes and sports enthusiasts worldwide.
