The marketing campaign for the latest installment in the Resident Evil series, titled “Resident Evil Requiem,” heavily relies on nostalgia. Trailers have highlighted the return of fan-favorite character Leon Kennedy to Raccoon City, the iconic setting of the series’ origins. Capcom, the Japanese developer behind the game, has refined its gameplay elements in this ninth main entry, delivering bone-chilling scares and thrilling action sequences.
The storyline of “Requiem” follows Grace Ashcroft, a young FBI agent investigating mysterious deaths at a condemned hotel where she witnessed her mother’s murder years ago. As Grace encounters the main antagonist, Victor Gideon, a former Umbrella Corporation scientist, Leon is on a quest to uncover the origins of a mysterious illness. The two protagonists find themselves trapped in the Rhodes Hill Chronic Care Center, reminiscent of classic Resident Evil settings, navigating through challenging puzzles and evading varied zombie threats.
The game presents a dual experience, with Grace’s sections focusing on survival horror elements and Leon’s segments offering intense action reminiscent of previous Resident Evil titles. While the initial setting at the Care Center shines, later areas feel somewhat repetitive, echoing past game environments. The narrative, revolving around Gideon’s pursuit of a mysterious entity called Elpis, lacks depth but showcases character growth for Grace and introspection from Leon.
Despite some shortcomings in narrative depth and antagonist development, “Resident Evil Requiem” excels in gameplay mechanics and atmosphere, making it a recommended addition to the series. The game is set for release on multiple platforms, including PC, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and Sony PlayStation 5, catering to a mature audience.
