“Newdock Eyes $300M Upgrade to Handle Larger Vessels”

A St. John’s company specializing in ship repair is contemplating an extensive upgrade project estimated to cost around $300 million. The planned modernization aims to allow the company to handle larger vessels efficiently.

Sean Leet, the managing director of Newdock, informed CBC News that the proposed redevelopment focuses on replacing the current graving dock in St. John’s harbor, installing a new ship lift system, and upgrading existing facilities. Leet emphasized the necessity of this upgrade, stating that the current graving dock has limitations in accommodating the increasing size and width of modern vessels.

While the final details of the project are still being worked out, Leet expressed optimism that the company’s board will reach a decision on the investment by spring. If approved, the anticipated timeline for completion is slightly over two years.

The implementation of a new ship lift system is crucial for Newdock’s operations. Leet highlighted how the company has faced challenges in servicing clients with larger ships due to the current system’s limitations, resulting in lost business opportunities.

Considering factors such as the growth in the size of Canadian Coast Guard vessels and the country’s commitment to boosting defense spending, Leet emphasized that the new ship lift system would enable Newdock to handle larger vessels and secure more defense-related projects. He stressed that the company’s strategy is centered on enhancing its capabilities to better serve its customers, including the federal government.

The expansion initiative aligns with efforts to reinforce Canada’s sovereignty and Arctic presence, as well as the drive to construct more vessels in Newfoundland and Labrador. Leet underscored that these considerations have influenced the company’s vision for the facility and its role in supporting national objectives.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic disruptions last year, which affected the company’s previous plans for modernization under different ownership, Newdock is now gearing up for a significant transformation. The proposed modernization project includes the installation of a new ship lift system capable of handling 28,000 tons and accommodating multiple vessels simultaneously, a substantial upgrade from the current 4,000-ton capacity.

To support the modernization efforts, Newdock plans to hire an additional 220 trades workers, as well as numerous staff and management positions, effectively more than doubling its current workforce. Upon completion, the new ship lift system is expected to be the largest of its kind in the Western Hemisphere, positioning Newdock as a key player in the maritime industry.
