Kurt Oatway, a 41-year-old elite sit-skier from Calgary, is intensively training in his home gym for the upcoming 2026 Paralympic Games in Italy. His dedication and resilience shine through as he aims to reclaim his position at the top of the global stage following a serious crash that kept him out of the 2022 Beijing Games.

The unfortunate incident occurred at the world championships in Lillehammer, Norway, just before the Paralympics, resulting in multiple injuries including broken bones, torn ligaments, and a punctured lung. Despite the setback, Oatway remained determined not to let this derail his Paralympic ambitions.

Recalling the pivotal moment in the hospital, Oatway made a firm decision that this setback would not be the end of his career. His journey has been a testament to his unwavering spirit and determination to overcome obstacles.

Having grown up in a skiing family in Edmonton, Oatway initially pursued skiing as an able-bodied athlete before a spinal cord injury from a rock climbing accident altered his path. Determined to ski again, he embarked on his adaptive skiing journey at Mission Ridge, where he quickly honed his skills and progressed in the sport.

Under the mentorship of coach Gord Poulton, Oatway’s rapid development and potential as a Paralympic skier became evident. The ski community at Mission Ridge rallied behind him, providing support and resources to help him pursue his dreams.

Transitioning from a local hill in Saskatchewan to the global stage required immense commitment from Oatway and his family, with his mother taking on logistical responsibilities to support his skiing endeavors. Despite the challenges, Oatway’s focus remained on enjoying the sport and inspiring others through his journey.

Oatway’s competitive journey led him to international success, culminating in a surprising gold medal win in the sitting super-G event at the 2018 Paralympic Games in PyeongChang. As he prepares for the upcoming Paralympics in Milan and Cortino, Oatway reflects on his roots in Saskatchewan and remains determined to make a triumphant return to the podium.

His story serves as a reminder of the power of perseverance and gratitude for the opportunities that have shaped his remarkable journey.
