Britney Spears was taken into custody in Southern California on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, as reported by state and local authorities. The incident occurred when California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers stopped a black BMW that Spears was driving, after it was observed speeding and swerving on Wednesday night. Following the stop, the pop star underwent several field sobriety tests before being arrested for allegedly driving under the influence of a mixture of drugs and alcohol.
Ventura County Sheriff’s Office disclosed that Spears was processed at a detention facility around 3 a.m. on Thursday and was subsequently released at approximately 6 a.m. The CHP informed CBC News that the matter is still being investigated, with pending results from chemical tests. A court appearance for Spears has been set for May 4.
Originally from Mississippi and raised in Louisiana, Spears gained fame as a teenage pop sensation, emerging as a prominent figure in the music industry during the 1990s and 2000s. Her career took off from Disney Channel’s “The Mickey Mouse Club” to MTV and beyond, with iconic hits like “Hit Me Baby One More Time,” “Oops! I Did It Again,” and “Toxic.”
In the 2000s, Spears faced challenges with her mental well-being and substance abuse, leading to a period of hospitalization in 2008. Recent years have seen intense scrutiny over the conservatorship that granted her father, James Spears, authority over her affairs and finances. This scrutiny fueled the “Free Britney” movement and a documentary shedding light on her legal battle with her father.
In a significant development in 2021, a judge terminated the conservatorship, marking a significant victory for the pop star.
