In an unusual event at Erin’s Pub in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, business owner Allan Bearns took the stage on a recent weekend afternoon. Instead of a musical performance, he embarked on a unique initiative to give back to the community. Bearns decided to read J.R.R. Tolkien’s classic novel, “The Hobbit,” in its entirety to raise funds for The Gathering Place, a local organization supporting the homeless population.

The reading coincided with Tolkien’s birthday, and Bearns found inspiration in the author’s themes of friendship and adventure. He saw parallels between the characters in Tolkien’s works and everyday individuals, emphasizing the importance of ordinary people rising to extraordinary challenges.

Reflecting on his personal experiences, Bearns revealed that he had faced homelessness during periods of his life, including sleeping on friends’ couches or in a utility trailer. Despite the lighthearted nature of the fundraiser, Bearns stressed the seriousness of the homelessness issue and the need for effective solutions.

It took Bearns nearly 11 hours to complete the reading marathon, wrapping up just before midnight and raising $1,292 for The Gathering Place. His dedication to the cause showcased his commitment to supporting the community and addressing the challenges faced by those without stable housing.

Bearns expressed his admiration for The Gathering Place’s efforts in combating homelessness, highlighting the organization as a beacon of hope in the community. His fundraising event not only honored Tolkien’s legacy but also served as a reminder of the ongoing battle against homelessness and the importance of collective action in creating positive change.
