Freezing rain is forecasted to create hazardous road conditions and potential power disruptions in southern Ontario, as per a warning issued by Environment Canada on Tuesday. The freezing rain is expected to commence in the morning or early afternoon, with freezing drizzle also anticipated. Later in the day, as temperatures increase, the precipitation is projected to transition into rain.
Ice buildup of one to five millimeters is likely between Hamilton and London, extending north toward Owen Sound. Navigating through the area, whether by driving or walking, will become more challenging, according to Environment Canada meteorologist Alyssa Young. She advised allowing extra space while driving and allocating more time for travel to ensure a slower and safer journey.
Both Environment Canada and the Ontario Provincial Police are advising drivers to exercise additional caution due to the icy conditions. Police are urging drivers to drive at reduced speeds and maintain increased distance between vehicles to enhance safety on the roads.
Ed Sanchuk, a spokesperson for the Ontario Provincial Police, emphasized the importance of adjusting driving behavior based on road and weather conditions to ensure a secure arrival at the destination and, more importantly, a safe return home to loved ones.
Although not as severe as the Boxing Day ice storm, Tuesday’s freezing rain could still result in local power outages due to ice accumulation, as highlighted in the Environment Canada warning.
