The Canadian television series “Heated Rivalry” has garnered a global fan base, with Culture Minister Marc Miller praising it as a significant achievement for Canadian content. Based on romance novels by Nova Scotia’s Rachel Reid, the Crave original show follows the love story of professional hockey players from rival teams.

Miller, expressing his enthusiasm after watching the first episode, commended the series for its compelling storyline and its efforts to challenge stereotypes. The cast of the show, which includes actors like Hudson Williams, François Arnaud, and Sophie Nelisse, showcases a wealth of Canadian talent. The production, predominantly filmed in Toronto and Hamilton, also highlights English and French cultures in Montreal, alongside featuring a score composed by Quebec’s Peter Peter.

With record-breaking viewership for a Crave Original series debut, “Heated Rivalry” has become a cultural phenomenon, inspiring various events nationwide, from dance parties to improv comedy shows. Miller noted the show’s role in celebrating hockey as a symbol of Canadian pride while also addressing taboo topics within the sport, particularly resonating with the 2SLGBTQ+ community.

The series has already been renewed for a second season, with Ottawa set to play a significant role in the upcoming plot. Ottawa Tourism has embraced this connection by claiming the city as the birthplace of one of the main characters, Shane Hollander. Miller and Rob Oliphant recently visited Dark Slope Studios in Scarborough, emphasizing Canada’s potential as a leader in cultural storytelling.

Oliphant, impressed by the show’s quality and thematic elements, highlighted its representation of Canadian values. Miller underscored the importance of supporting Canadian productions, hoping that “Heated Rivalry” will bring more attention to the diversity and vibrancy of Canadian culture.
