A tragic incident occurred in northeastern Thailand as a construction crane fell onto a moving passenger train, causing a derailment that resulted in the loss of at least 32 lives and left many others injured. The derailment took place on a section of a significant high-speed rail project aimed at connecting China with various parts of Southeast Asia.
The crane, utilized in the construction of an elevated railway segment, collapsed while the train was en route from Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani province. Images captured by Thai media showed billows of smoke rising from the site, with construction equipment dangling between two concrete pillars.
Rescue efforts depicted in footage from ThaiPBS revealed rescue workers on overturned train carriages, some with substantial damage. Portions of the crane were strewn along the railway track, while paramedics tended to wounded passengers.
Reports indicated that the train consisted of three carriages, with the rear two carriages sustaining the most severe damage. Transport Minister Piphat Ratchakitprakan confirmed that 195 individuals were on board, prompting an investigation into the incident.
The collapsed elevated segment is part of the Thai-Chinese high-speed railway endeavor linking Bangkok to Nong Khai province on the Laos border. This project, part of the broader Belt and Road Initiative, involves an investment of approximately $23 billion Cdn and aims to enhance connectivity between China and Southeast Asia.
Notably, a railway tunnel collapse in Nakhon Ratchasima in August 2024, attributed in part to heavy rainfall, claimed the lives of three workers. The latest incident has once again drawn attention to the safety and challenges associated with large-scale infrastructure projects in the region.
