Elton John’s Husband Accuses Daily Mail of Privacy Breaches

Share

David Furnish, the husband of British singer Elton John, testified in London’s High Court claiming that the Daily Mail’s publisher had illegally acquired information about them, including details allegedly taken from their friend, Prince Harry. Furnish, a Canadian producer, is among seven claimants suing Associated Newspapers for privacy breaches, alleging that the Mail titles had shown bias against their relationship. Associated Newspapers denies the accusations of phone hacking and other illicit activities, stating that the information reported was either public knowledge or obtained from legitimate sources.

During the court proceedings, Furnish highlighted that the specifics in the Mail articles went beyond information available through media outlets, John’s website, or statements from their spokesperson. Furnish’s testimony comes as part of a high-profile lawsuit, following similar claims made by Prince Harry, actors Elizabeth Hurley and Sadie Frost, ex-lawmaker Simon Hughes, and activist Doreen Lawrence. Elton John is scheduled to give his testimony on Friday.

The legal dispute revolves around ten articles published between 2002 and 2015, including a 2007 piece in the Mail on Sunday about a tribute concert for Princess Diana, Harry’s late mother. Prince Harry mentioned in his statement that he suspected private voicemail exchanges with John regarding the concert, while the Mail’s legal team argued that the information was sourced from well-connected royal contacts.

Furnish alleged in his written evidence that their home’s landlines were potentially compromised, suggesting that the Mail was complicit in obtaining information through their friendships with Hurley and Prince Harry. He emphasized John’s admiration for Prince Harry and criticized the Mail for publishing what he described as judgmental and narrow-minded stories about them. Furnish also condemned the Mail for accessing their son’s birth certificate before them, labeling the act as distressing. The couple felt violated by the intrusion into their family life and personal records.

In a separate legal development in 2025, Prince Harry settled a lawsuit against Rupert Murdoch’s News Group Newspapers, receiving damages and an apology for privacy violations committed by The Sun and News of the World.

The rewritten content aims to provide a fresh perspective on the legal proceedings involving David Furnish and Elton John, highlighting their claims of privacy breaches against the Daily Mail publisher. The article also mentions Prince Harry’s involvement in the case and the broader context of privacy issues in the media industry.
