“Fishermen Load 330 Pounds of Cod into SUV for Wildfire-Affected Residents”

In eastern Newfoundland, two fishermen collaborated with a forklift to load 330 pounds of cod into an SUV on Tuesday. The purchase of frozen cod by the fisher harvesters’ co-operative in Petty Harbour was intended for distribution to residents of Conception Bay North on Jan. 6, a day celebrated as Old Christmas Day in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Bernard Martin, a member of the Petty Harbour Fishermen’s Co-operative board, emphasized the importance of the initiative, stating that many wildfire-affected individuals lost not only their homes but also their winter fish supply stored in freezers. The donation not only aids those in need but also highlights the community’s support during challenging times.

A series of wildfires earlier in the year ravaged multiple communities in Conception Bay North, destroying around 200 homes. Gerry Rogers, a local resident involved in coordinating the donation, mentioned the hardships faced by residents, especially the challenges of rebuilding due to inadequate insurance coverage for old homes in the area.

The devastation left by the fires, which also resulted in power outages, underscores the urgent need for assistance. While efforts such as the Canadian Red Cross’s fundraising have been ongoing, the support provided by the co-operative in supplying fish serves as a symbol of solidarity and comfort for the affected community.

The collaboration between the fishermen and volunteers like Gerry Rogers demonstrates the spirit of compassion and unity prevalent in Newfoundland and Labrador. The hope is that more entities, including fish processing companies, will join in supporting the relief efforts before the distribution on Jan. 6, recognizing the importance of helping one’s neighbors during times of crisis.
