Thousands gathered at San Francisco’s Civic Center to honor the memory of Bob Weir, the iconic guitarist and co-founder of the Grateful Dead, who passed away at 78. Joan Baez and John Mayer addressed the crowd, following a prayer by Buddhist monks. Fans paid tribute by leaving roses, notes, and candles at an altar adorned with photos. Many expressed their love and gratitude, asking Weir to convey their regards to Jerry Garcia and Phil Lesh, fellow deceased bandmates.

Attendees of all ages and styles, from dreadlocked Deadheads to young couples and families, came together to commemorate Weir’s legacy. Weir, who joined the Grateful Dead at 17, contributed to classics like “Sugar Magnolia” and “Mexicali Blues.” Known for blending blues, jazz, and folk in their music, the Dead’s improvisational performances attracted a loyal following. Despite Garcia’s passing, the band continued as Dead & Company with John Mayer.

Darla Sagos, who flew in from Seattle for the event, noted the absence of new tour dates post last summer’s shows, indicating a change. Weir’s unexpected death from lung complications, despite beating cancer, left fans saddened but determined to carry on his musical spirit. Survived by his wife and daughters, Weir’s family emphasized his belief in music’s unifying power. As Monet Weir stated, “The show must go on.”
