“Homeless Woman Finds Hope in Permanent Housing Project”

Share

Deborah Ann Badeau tunes in to Country 94 radio from her cozy apartment, marking almost a year since she transitioned from six years of tent living to a supportive housing unit. Badeau, 61, endured an abusive relationship and subsequent homelessness following a traumatic bus accident. Opting for a tent living arrangement, she valued the freedom it offered, especially during warmer seasons. However, the harsh reality of plummeting temperatures and a transformative offer of permanent housing brought tears to her eyes, saving her from a state of hopelessness and despair.

Badeau, one of more than 20 residents at the Somerset ACRES site, now resides in one of the 18 micro units converted from trailers. These compact living spaces feature private amenities such as bathrooms, kitchenettes, and essential furnishings, catering to individual needs and even accommodating couples. Managed by the non-profit Fresh Start Services, the initiative aims to facilitate a smooth transition for individuals from encampment life to self-sufficient living.

Residents, including Badeau, benefit from practical life skills training, ranging from budget management to cooking, fostering a sense of warmth and security previously absent in their lives. Despite facing mobility challenges, Badeau found living in a tent a safer option than traditional shelters, even though it came with its own set of difficulties, including theft and vandalism.

Melanie Vautour, Executive Director of Fresh Start Services, lauded the success of the pilot project, emphasizing its focus on a “housing first” approach in aiding individuals who have experienced long-term homelessness. Notably, three residents have already transitioned to permanent housing after honing essential tenancy skills and community integration.

Initially met with skepticism over public safety concerns, the Somerset ACRES site has gradually earned the trust of the community, with residents actively engaging in neighborhood initiatives. Despite facing negative stereotypes surrounding homelessness, residents remain optimistic about their progress and future prospects.

This groundbreaking initiative aligns with Saint John’s comprehensive Housing for All strategy, highlighting the city’s commitment to providing dignified housing solutions for vulnerable populations. The project’s unique approach of offering personalized living spaces fosters independence and self-reliance, paving the way for a brighter future for all residents.
