After much anticipation, the youth of Little Salmon Carmacks First Nation are soon to have their dedicated space. The construction of a new youth center in the community is nearing completion this spring.

Nina Dickson, the assistant director of health and wellness for Little Salmon Carmacks First Nation, expressed her happiness for the youth, mentioning that she initiated the project in 2023 after securing funding through Jordan’s Principle.

Chanel Johnnie, the Youth Councillor for Little Salmon Carmacks First Nation, emphasized the importance of providing a space exclusively for the youth, as the community currently lacks such a facility. The upcoming building aims to address this gap.

Youth involvement has been integral to the project from the beginning, ensuring that the center reflects their vision. Dickson highlighted the significance of incorporating the youth’s perspectives, mentioning that they have actively participated in shaping the center.

The new youth center will feature amenities such as a woodshop, metalworking area, jewelry and art-making space, a movie theater, life skills programs, and naloxone training for prevention work.

Chief Russel Blackjack emphasized that the center will offer opportunities for youth to learn the Northern Tutchone language, aiming to revive traditional language and culture. Additionally, the youth will engage in the construction process, contributing to the building of the deck with guidance from Wildstone Construction.

The naming of the center will be decided by the youth, aligning with the project’s collaborative approach. The official opening is anticipated next summer, symbolizing the community’s commitment to empowering its youth and valuing their input and future aspirations.
