A man from Nova Scotia has been sentenced to 4.5 years in prison for causing a fatal crash that resulted in the deaths of three individuals on a rainy evening in the fall. Tyler Strong, who was driving at a speed more than double the legal limit, accepted the sentencing recommendation put forth by the Crown and the defense. Along with the prison term, Strong also received a five-year driving prohibition and a ten-year firearms ownership ban, both to take effect after his release.
The incident occurred when Strong, driving a rental Volkswagen Golf, was traveling on Highway 2 towards Amherst at approximately 10 p.m. on October 21, 2023. Despite the posted speed limit of 70 km/h, Strong was clocked at 168 km/h after overtaking another vehicle. He collided with a Mitsubishi crossover that was turning left onto an on-ramp for Highway 104. The impact occurred while Strong was estimated to be traveling at a speed of 149 km/h.
Tragically, three individuals in the Mitsubishi lost their lives, and a fourth occupant sustained severe injuries, including a broken femur and nerve damage. Strong’s girlfriend, who was a passenger in his vehicle, also suffered serious injuries, such as a collapsed lung, bowel loss, and multiple broken ribs.
In justifying the sentence, Justice Joshua Arnold acknowledged Strong’s challenging background and the efforts he made to overcome his difficult upbringing. Despite recognizing Strong’s remorse and desire for rehabilitation, the court took into account the devastating consequences of his actions on the victims’ families and the broader community.
