“Out-of-Tune, In Harmony: The Rise of Tuneless Choirs”

Share

Sharon Marnell found herself in a public hot tub, seeking relief for her stiff shoulders, when she unexpectedly broke into song. A fellow hot tub user complimented her singing voice, suggesting she should join their choir designed for those who lack singing abilities. Intrigued by the concept, Marnell, drawing upon her musical and teaching background, decided to establish her own tuneless choir in England. The initial small gathering blossomed into a 110-member choir that performed at a music festival.

After relocating to Canada in 2024, Marnell is now introducing two tuneless choirs on Vancouver Island. The first tuneless choir originated in West Bridgford, England, spearheaded by a passionate singer named Nadine Cooper. Cooper enlisted the help of local choir leader Bernie Bracha to create a choir where being pitch-perfect was not a requirement.

Marnell emphasized that in tuneless choirs, as long as some members hit the correct notes, the overall sound is harmonious, akin to a crowd singing along at a concert. These choirs have gained popularity in England, with over 30 groups currently active and plans for a special retreat in February 2026 to commemorate the 10-year anniversary of tuneless choirs.

Reflecting on her experience, Marnell noted the profound impact of singing, regardless of skill level, within the tuneless choir setting. Many participants had avoided singing due to past criticism, but within the tuneless choir, they found a supportive environment to express themselves freely, forging lasting friendships and experiencing personal growth.

The goal of tuneless choirs, according to Marnell, is to foster joy, confidence, and connection through music. No auditions or musical expertise are required; instead, participants will sing popular songs they are familiar with, promoting a fun and energetic atmosphere during sessions. The Sidney and Langford tuneless choirs will kick off their inaugural meetings in January, welcoming anyone with a love for music and a willingness to embrace the experience.
