The Quebec Superior Court has granted permission for a class-action lawsuit against Ticketmaster, alleging that the company imposed unfair service fees on ticket sales. Justice Eleni Yiannakis, in a recent decision, ruled that the plaintiffs have satisfied the requirements for a full trial and could receive compensatory refunds if successful.
Montreal law firm Paquette Gadler initiated the class action, claiming that Ticketmaster’s service fees contravene Quebec’s Consumer Protection Act and the Quebec Civil Code. The lawsuit asserts that Ticketmaster’s fee structure, tied to ticket prices rather than service costs, is exploitative.
The lawsuit, filed in August 2024 on behalf of plaintiff Felipe Morales, represents Quebec residents who purchased tickets through Ticketmaster for North American events since July 2021. Ticketmaster, a global ticket seller for concerts, sports, and various shows, did not respond immediately to requests for comment following Monday’s court ruling.
