The Quebec Liberal Party will commence its leadership race on January 12, 2026, marking the end of Pablo Rodriguez’s six-month term. The selection of his successor is scheduled for March 14, 2026. Currently, Marc Tanguay, who represents LaFontaine as an MNA, is serving as the interim leader of the Official Opposition in the National Assembly. Following Rodriguez’s resignation amidst an internal crisis last Thursday, Tanguay resumed the leadership role.
Allegations of illegal campaign donations aimed at securing Rodriguez’s victory have plagued the party. In response, Quebec’s anti-corruption police, UPAC, have initiated an investigation into the alleged pay-for-vote scheme. Despite these developments, Rodriguez maintains his unawareness of the arrangement.
Those interested in running for the leadership position have until February 13 to submit their applications and gather 750 signatures from eligible party members. Moreover, candidates must provide a $30,000 deposit to enter the race and adhere to an election spending cap of $120,000, excluding the initial deposit.
