A local Prince Albert library branch buzzes with children’s laughter and excitement as Prince Albert Raiders players engage in an evening of reading, a part of the longstanding literacy initiative, Reading with the Raiders. Young fans get a unique opportunity to interact with their hockey idols in a different setting compared to the usual game nights.
Riley Penner, a parent, expressed his enthusiasm for the program, highlighting the positive impact it has had on his twin sons over the years. The players, like forward Ben Harvey and center Riley Boychuk, aim to show children that their support extends beyond the hockey rink by fostering relationships and interests off the ice.
The program, established over 25 years ago in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Prince Albert, emphasizes the importance of community engagement and connection. Brian Bosomworth, a Rotary member, noted the significance of the time and attention the players dedicate to the children during these events.
In addition to the reading sessions, a season-long reading challenge is integrated into the program, encouraging children to track their reading progress and offering them a chance to win prizes at the end of the season. The initiative continues to attract both familiar faces and new families, expanding its impact throughout the Raiders’ season.
For the kids participating, meeting their favorite players up close, receiving signed memorabilia, and understanding the value of reading alongside their hockey heroes make for a memorable experience that goes beyond the excitement of the game days.
