Russia recently utilized a hypersonic missile to strike a location in western Ukraine near the Poland border in the European Union. Following the attack, high-ranking officials openly praised the capabilities of the nuclear-capable weapon, which was perceived by some as a direct warning to Western nations.
The missile deployed by Russia, known as Oreshnik, reportedly travels at an astounding speed of 13,000 kilometers per hour and can carry six warheads, each with its own submunitions. This marks the second instance of Russia using the Oreshnik against Ukraine, a weapon that is deemed impossible for the Ukrainian forces to intercept.
While Moscow’s arsenal includes a variety of deadly weapons such as ballistic missiles and drones, the decision to deploy the Oreshnik seems to be more aligned with political messaging rather than pure military strategy. Dmitry Medvedev, the former Russian President and current deputy chairman of the country’s security council, likened the Oreshnik strike to a necessary antidote in a world plagued by what he described as “unhinged actors” and “dangerous psychotics.”
The actions of Russia have drawn condemnation from leaders of the U.K., France, Germany, and Canada’s Prime Minister, who labeled it as a dangerous escalation. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas interpreted the missile strike as a warning directed towards the U.S. and Europe.
Residents in Kyiv expressed concerns over the ongoing attacks, with one resident emphasizing the threat posed by Shahed drones over the Oreshnik missile. The use of the Oreshnik missile by Russia has sparked discussions on its purpose, with many viewing it as more of a propaganda tool rather than a direct military necessity.
The Oreshnik missile was reportedly launched by Russia in retaliation for an alleged drone attack on President Vladimir Putin’s residence, a claim dismissed by Ukraine and the United States. The unique feature of the Oreshnik lies in its hypersonic speed and the ability to target multiple locations with its six warheads and submunitions.
Experts assert that intercepting the Oreshnik is currently beyond Ukraine’s capabilities due to the lack of hypersonic interceptors. The complexity of the missile’s trajectory and the deployment of multiple warheads make interception a highly challenging task.
The recent deployment of the Oreshnik by Russia is seen as a strategic move to send a message to Ukraine’s allies. The missile’s capability to reach European capitals swiftly has raised concerns among officials and defense experts, signaling a broader geopolitical agenda behind its usage.
