Zohran Mamdani assumed office as the Mayor of New York City on Thursday, stepping into one of the most demanding roles in American politics. He pledged to revamp the government in support of the city’s hardworking working class. Mamdani, a member of the Democratic Party, took his oath at a disused subway station beneath city hall, placing his hand on a Quran. Following some initial work at his new office, Mamdani returned to city hall later in the day for an official public inauguration, where U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders, a key influence on the mayor, administered the oath a second time.

Addressing a spirited audience, Mamdani declared a bold approach to governance, emphasizing the city hall’s commitment to enhance the lives of New Yorkers. He emphasized a proactive agenda, vowing to utilize the city’s authority to benefit its residents. Mamdani promptly rescinded multiple executive orders from the previous administration, focusing on reforms related to housing and tenant protection.

During his swearing-in ceremony, Mamdani reiterated his dedication to democratic socialism, highlighting his intention to uphold his principles despite any perceived radicalism. He received support from Sanders, who emphasized the necessity of policies, such as taxing the wealthy and ensuring affordable housing, as fundamental rather than radical.

Following the event, Mamdani wasted no time and announced initiatives to bolster tenant protection and housing construction. He was joined by his wife, Rama Duwaji, at the ceremony, which featured various prominent figures, including former Mayor Eric Adams and actor Mandy Patinkin.

Mamdani, the first Muslim, South Asian, and African-born mayor of New York City, faces a city in the midst of recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, with persistent concerns over high living costs and rents. As he assumes office, Mamdani is tasked with addressing a range of challenges, from sanitation and public safety to transit issues. He acknowledged the weight of expectations on his administration, expressing a commitment to proving the effectiveness of progressive governance.

Despite past tensions with U.S. President Donald Trump, Mamdani’s meeting with Trump at the White House indicated a willingness to collaborate on various issues, though policy differences may lead to future disagreements. Additionally, Mamdani’s critical stance on Israel’s government has drawn skepticism from some members of the city’s Jewish community. However, supporters anticipate Mamdani’s leadership will unify the city, ushering in a new era of governance.
