“Ottawa Introduces Coffee Cup Recycling in Updated Program”

Share

Starting from January 1, Ottawa residents can now include coffee cups in their blue bins as part of the city’s updated recycling program aligning with Ontario’s new recycling system. Besides the addition of new items like deodorant and ice cream tubs, there are changes in the collection process. Miller Waste Systems, on behalf of Circular Materials, will now handle the collection instead of the City of Ottawa, potentially altering the pickup timings.

Residents are advised by the city to contact Miller Waste Systems for any collection issues, with further escalation to Circular Materials if necessary. Some critics question the decision to shift responsibilities away from the city, emphasizing the benefits of local accountability and innovation.

Circular Materials, comprising major Canadian brands like Coca-Cola Canada and McDonald’s, will monitor packaging supply from member companies to determine recycling fees. This approach incentivizes companies to reduce packaging, thereby lowering their fees and supporting the recycling program.

Despite these changes, the City of Ottawa will maintain its waste management services for public spaces and municipal buildings. Schools and newer multi-residential buildings are not yet eligible to join the provincial recycling program until 2031. Homeowners can continue using their current bins, with replacements available from Miller Waste Systems at no cost. Bins should still be placed at the curb by 7 a.m. on collection days.
