Elton John Condemns Daily Mail Phone Hacking

Share

Singer Elton John expressed his outrage in London’s High Court on Friday upon discovering allegations that his landline phones were reportedly bugged on behalf of the Daily Mail. John condemned the newspaper’s actions as falling below basic standards of human decency. The iconic singer, renowned for hits like “Rocket Man” and “Your Song,” is currently engaged in a legal battle against Associated Newspapers, the publisher of the Daily Mail, alongside his spouse David Furnish, Prince Harry, and four others.

Associated Newspapers refutes the accusations of phone hacking and other illicit activities, asserting that their publications were sourced from information already in the public domain or obtained through legitimate channels, such as connections within celebrities’ social circles. The publisher has dismissed the claims as baseless smears.

Appearing via video link in a blue shirt and green jacket, Elton John disclosed that he became aware of the alleged misconduct by the Daily Mail through his close friend, actor Elizabeth Hurley, who is also a claimant in the case. Hurley had been informed by a private investigator that John’s landline phones had been compromised during her stay with him shortly after the birth of her child.

The credibility of the evidence provided by the private investigator has become a central point of contention in the trial. Initially supportive of the claimants, the investigator later retracted his statement, casting doubt on its authenticity. John, who has achieved over 300 million record sales throughout his illustrious six-decade career, expressed his outrage upon realizing the severity of the situation.

The singer, who mentioned not owning a mobile phone, revealed that his three landline phones were allegedly hacked while Hurley was staying with him. Despite his inability to attend the court proceedings in person due to visual impairment, John emphasized his commitment to standing up against injustices in his interactions with the British press.

During the court session, Associated’s lawyer questioned John regarding specific articles published between 2002 and 2015, suggesting that the information might have originated from his spokesperson or lawful sources within his social circle. Dismissing this notion, John affirmed that his friends do not engage with the press, underscoring the importance of trust in his relationships. He criticized the focus on minor details rather than addressing the significant transgressions committed by Associated Newspapers.

One of the contentious articles highlighted by John and Furnish pertains to a 2010 piece about the couple’s use of surrogacy, where the Mail allegedly obtained their son’s birth certificate prior to their awareness. John condemned the invasion of his medical privacy and details surrounding his son’s birth as a violation of fundamental standards of human decency.

Elton John is the final claimant to present evidence in the ongoing trial, which is expected to conclude next month after a nine-week duration.
