In the countdown to the upcoming women’s slalom event at the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics, the competition between Mikaela Shiffrin and Swiss skier Camille Rast is intensifying with only 45 days left. Rast broke Shiffrin’s six-race winning streak in World Cup slaloms by edging out the American by 0.14 seconds in Slovenia, where Rast posted the fastest times in both runs.
Despite leading Shiffrin after the first leg in Austria recently, Rast ultimately secured her fourth career victory and third in slalom by maintaining her lead through the finish line. Shiffrin, acknowledging Rast’s impressive performance, expressed the challenge she faced in trying to match her rival’s skiing prowess.
Following Rast’s triumph, the Swiss skier’s consecutive wins on the same weekend, including her maiden giant slalom victory, showcased her exceptional form on the slopes. Rast dedicated her giant slalom win to the victims of a tragic fire near her hometown, emphasizing the emotional significance of her achievements.
Amidst the fierce competition, Rast and Shiffrin dominated the field, with Rast’s teammate Wendy Holdener securing third place, trailing by a significant 1.83 seconds. Shiffrin’s teammate Paula Moltzan finished fourth, demonstrating the duo’s exceptional performance in the event.
Looking ahead, the upcoming slalom races in Flachau and the Czech Republic present crucial opportunities for the skiers before the Winter Olympics. Meanwhile, men’s World Cup races were absent this weekend, highlighting the focus on the women’s events in the lead-up to the prestigious competition.
