Toronto Blue Jays fans can attribute the team’s latest addition to Kazuma Okamoto’s daughter, in part. The 29-year-old slugger, who recently agreed to a four-year, $60 million US contract with the team, revealed during a press conference in Toronto that he presented logos of all 30 MLB teams to his daughter and asked her to pick her favorite. Fortunately for Canadian baseball enthusiasts, she selected the Blue Jays.
Expressing his gratitude for the opportunity, Okamoto stated, “Thank you very much for this opportunity. I am very happy to join Blue Jays.” He further added, “I will work hard every day and do my best for the team. Thank you for your support. Nice to meet you. Go Blue Jays.”
A six-time all-star with the Yomiuri Giants in Nippon Professional Baseball, Okamoto brings a strong bat to the middle of the lineup and offers defensive versatility. With three Japanese league home run titles under his belt, he has proven his prowess on the field.
Blue Jays Manager Ross Atkins highlighted Okamoto’s ability to excel against various pitching styles, emphasizing his power-hitting approach. Atkins also mentioned Okamoto’s potential contributions on the defensive side, making him a valuable asset to the team’s roster.
Last season, Okamoto boasted a .327 batting average with 15 home runs and 49 RBIs in 69 games. Despite missing a significant portion of the season due to an elbow injury, the six-foot, 212-pound infielder showcased his talent. Expected to play primarily at third base, Okamoto can also provide backup at first base for Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and fill in at left field when needed.
The Blue Jays have been active in the offseason, making notable signings like Okamoto, along with pitchers Dylan Cease, Cody Ponce, and Tyler Rogers. The team’s aggressive approach signals their commitment to strengthening the roster. While the Blue Jays remain open to further moves, Atkins acknowledged the importance of balancing new additions with existing talent.
Okamoto’s introduction to the Blue Jays has been met with enthusiasm from fans, with many seeing him as a perfect fit for the team’s style of play. His skill set aligns well with the Blue Jays’ strategy, offering flexibility and depth to the lineup. The addition of Okamoto signifies a positive step forward for the organization as they aim to build a competitive team for the upcoming season.
