“Canadian Figure Skating Championships Determine Olympic Hopefuls”

Share

The Canadian figure skating championships in Gatineau, Que., are a pivotal event leading up to the Winter Olympics, just four weeks away. While junior athletes kicked off the competition, the elite-level events starting this Friday will play a crucial role in determining the Canadian representatives in the upcoming Olympics in Italy.

Following a disappointing performance at the 2022 Beijing Games, where Canada failed to secure a figure skating medal for the first time since 1980, the country has secured a total of eight entries in various events in Milan. These include three in ice dance, two in pairs, one each in men’s and women’s singles, and participation in the team competition starting on Feb. 6.

Unlike the U.S. track and field trials, where Olympic spots are solely based on top finishes, the Canadian championships form part of an evaluation process considering skaters’ performances over recent seasons. Skate Canada, the national governing body for the sport, will unveil its Olympic selections shortly after the championships conclude on Sunday evening, following the final stage of the ice dance competition.

While some skaters have likely secured their spots, the remaining positions are still up for grabs based on this weekend’s performances. Even those guaranteed a spot will face pressure to demonstrate medal-contending form in their last major competition before the Olympics.

In ice dance, Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier, along with pairs duo Deanna Stellato-Dudek and Maxime Deschamps, are expected to lead the Canadian charge in Milan. Despite facing challenges, these skaters have demonstrated consistency and success at prestigious global events.

In the singles events, Canada’s chances of securing a medal are slim. However, the competition for Olympic spots in both men’s and women’s categories is intense, with emerging talents vying for their chance to represent Canada.

Viewers can catch the live streaming of the ongoing junior events and upcoming elite-level competitions on CBCSports.ca and the CBC Sports app. The schedule for the elite events includes men’s short, pairs short, ice dance rhythm, men’s free, women’s short, pairs free, women’s free, and ice dance free events.
