“Greenlanders Oppose U.S. Acquisition Bid”

Share

U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed interest in acquiring Greenland, citing national security reasons. However, this move has sparked concerns among Greenlanders regarding their own national security.

Inuit advocacy groups and Greenlanders residing in Canada strongly oppose American ambitions over their territory. They emphasize that they do not wish to be pawns in geopolitical games orchestrated by distant powerful figures.

Sara Olsvig, chair of the Inuit Circumpolar Council and a former member of the Greenlandic and Danish parliaments, emphasized that they reject the idea of a “better colonizer.” Having experienced colonization before, they are wary of external interests negatively impacting them from afar.

A recent poll conducted by the Verian Group revealed that the majority of Greenlanders are against becoming Americans or Danes. Despite seeking more self-governance, the Inuit community also values international cooperation platforms like the Arctic Council.

Concerns have been raised by Laakkuluk Williamson, a resident of Iqaluit with Greenlandic heritage, who fears Greenland could become akin to American territories such as American Samoa or Puerto Rico, lacking constitutional protections and representation in Congress.

Aaju Peter, a lawyer originally from Greenland now residing in Iqaluit, acknowledges Greenland’s limited ability to resist U.S. force but insists that Trump’s threats violate international law and the Inuit’s right to self-determination.

While Trump suggests that failing to acquire Greenland could lead to its takeover by Russia or China, both countries have denied any imminent threat to Greenland. Diplomatic discussions are scheduled between the foreign ministers of Denmark and Greenland with U.S. officials this week.

The Greenlandic and Danish foreign ministers are set to meet with U.S. Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio at the White House. The situation continues to draw global attention and concern, especially within the Inuit community.
