Ukraine’s military is facing significant challenges as Russia continues its invasion after years of conflict, according to the country’s new defense minister. Mykhailo Fedorov highlighted issues such as widespread desertions, with approximately 200,000 troops leaving, and around two million people avoiding the draft. He also mentioned problems like bureaucratic hurdles, outdated organizational structures, and disruptions in equipment supply along the 1,000-kilometer front line.

Fedorov emphasized the need to modernize the military’s structure to align with new technologies. Appointed by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Fedorov, a 34-year-old with a background in digital transformation, has been credited with advancing drone technology and implementing successful e-government platforms.

The defense ministry is facing a significant financial shortfall of $6.9 billion US. To support Ukraine’s military and economy, the European Union has pledged a substantial loan program over the next two years, as announced by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

Since the start of Russia’s invasion in February 2022, Ukraine’s defense sector has seen significant growth. Fedorov noted a considerable increase in private drone and electronic warfare companies, with the country now boasting hundreds of manufacturers in these sectors. New industries like private missile production and ground-based robotic systems have also emerged, with around 20 missile producers and over 100 companies focusing on robotic systems.
