The Miami Dolphins have dismissed head coach Mike McDaniel, signaling the end of his four-year coaching stint with the team. McDaniel, once regarded as the future of the franchise, was let go after a disappointing 7-10 season that saw the Dolphins miss the playoffs for the second consecutive year.
Team owner Stephen Ross stated that after thorough evaluation and discussions, he decided that the organization required significant change, leading to McDaniel’s termination. During McDaniel’s tenure, the Dolphins achieved a record of 35-33, making the playoffs in his first two seasons but failing to advance past the first round each time. Miami’s postseason hopes for the current year ended with a defeat against Pittsburgh in Week 15, extending their playoff-win drought to 25 years.
McDaniel expressed his disappointment in not delivering better results on the field, emphasizing his initial vision of a united team playing with passion and energy towards championship success. Following the departure of longtime general manager Chris Grier and a disjointed season finish, which included the benching of quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, Ross felt compelled to make the coaching change.
Having joined the Dolphins in 2022 after a successful stint as San Francisco’s offensive coordinator, McDaniel was initially seen as a creative force who could elevate the team’s performance alongside Tagovailoa. Despite an encouraging start with 20 wins in his first 33 games, including a playoff appearance in his debut season, the team’s performance declined in subsequent years.
The Dolphins, who haven’t won a playoff game since 2000, have faced off-field issues and a lack of on-field success in recent years. The team’s struggles in the 2024 season, including culture issues and lackluster performances, led to McDaniel’s dismissal. As the Dolphins navigate another offseason of uncertainty, the search for a new head coach begins, marking a new chapter for the franchise.
