“Arrest Made in Defacement of Iran’s Embassy in Ottawa”

Ottawa police have reported the arrest of an individual on charges related to trespassing following an incident where Iran’s closed embassy was defaced during an anti-regime demonstration on Monday. Authorities were alerted around 5:50 a.m. about an individual breaching the embassy’s perimeter fence. The embassy has remained unoccupied since Canada terminated diplomatic relations with Iran in 2012.

A video circulated on social media captured a protester inside the embassy premises removing Iran’s national emblem from above the exterior doors and inspecting a gated window. The emblem, representing the Islamic Republic of Iran, was substituted with a sign and a flag depicting a lion and a sun, symbols used before the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

While the authenticity of the video has not been officially confirmed, it was noted that the national emblem was missing from above the doors by Monday afternoon. Ottawa police are investigating the incident for potential additional offenses.

The defacement of the embassy occurred amidst widespread protests across Iran, initially triggered by economic grievances but escalating to include calls for the resignation of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. As tensions rise in Iran, Global Affairs Canada has advised Canadians in the country to depart immediately due to the ongoing unrest.

The Vienna Convention stipulates that diplomatic properties should be respected and safeguarded even in the absence of diplomatic ties, obligating nations to ensure protection. In the case of Iran, the Swiss embassy in Canada serves as the “protecting power,” overseeing Iranian diplomatic assets and certain consular services in Tehran.

While the Iranian mission to the United Nations and the Swiss Embassy in Ottawa have yet to issue official statements regarding the incident, previous instances of vandalism at the embassy’s premises have been recorded. The situation remains fluid as protests in Iran continue to intensify, prompting concerns over the stability of the Iranian regime and its regional influence.
