Community Mourns 13-Year-Old Drew Nickerson after Tragic Dog Attack

A community in southwest Nova Scotia is grieving the loss of a 13-year-old who tragically died in a dog attack. The community gathered at a local center to honor the boy, Drew Nickerson, known for his love of biking and generosity towards other children. Flowers, photos of Nickerson, and his bicycle were displayed at the front of the room during the ceremony.

Rev. Shawn Hatfield expressed the deep sorrow felt by the community over Nickerson’s passing, who succumbed to injuries sustained from a dog mauling on January 3. The ceremony was attended by family members, former teachers, classmates, friends, and soccer teammates who remembered Nickerson as a kind, empathetic, and inquisitive individual.

Parise Jeffrey, Nickerson’s stepmother, emotionally expressed that bidding farewell to him feels surreal. An obituary highlighted Nickerson’s selfless nature, mentioning how he would share his lunch money with other children. Photos and videos showcased his adventurous spirit, enjoying activities like swimming and riding ATVs.

The RCMP confirmed that the dogs involved in the attack were two Cane Corsos and a Rottweiler, all of which were euthanized. Nickerson was transported to a hospital in Halifax after the attack and tragically passed away on January 5. The community rallied around the family, raising significant funds through a GoFundMe campaign to support them.

Nickerson’s soccer team, Southwest Blast FC, praised his passion for the sport and his ability to brighten any room with his smile, kindness, and humor. The outpouring of support extended beyond the local community, with condolences pouring in from across Canada.

As the community continues to mourn this heartbreaking loss, the investigation into the incident remains ongoing. The tragic event has left a profound impact on all those who knew and loved Drew Nickerson.
