“Deadly Storm Ravages Gaza, Claims Lives and Homes”

Share

A rainstorm swept through the Gaza Strip, causing significant damage to shelters and claiming the lives of at least six individuals, according to local health officials. The storm led to the collapse of homes, including tents housing families displaced by recent conflicts. Tragically, five people, including two women and a young girl, perished as homes crumbled near Gaza City’s beach. In central Gaza, a one-year-old boy succumbed to hypothermia in a tent. Tents were uprooted and thrown considerable distances by strong winds, with some landing in muddy pools. Three members of the same family lost their lives when an eight-meter wall fell on their tent in a coastal area near Gaza City. The survivors’ relatives began the daunting task of rebuilding the shelters after removing the debris.

Residents scrambled to reinforce remaining shelters by securing pegs and placing sandbags to prevent flooding. Meanwhile, families gathered at hospital morgues for special prayers before the funerals. The situation in Gaza remains dire, with over two million people confined to a narrow coastal strip, many living in makeshift tents or damaged structures following the conflict. The harsh conditions have led to numerous casualties, with 31 reported winter-related deaths due to exposure to cold or unsafe buildings.

The dire need for shelter was underscored by the destruction caused by the recent storm, with over 7,000 tents damaged within 48 hours. The lack of resources, including fuel shortages and damaged equipment, hampered the response efforts. The United Nations and Palestinian officials emphasized the urgent requirement for 300,000 new tents for the 1.5 million displaced individuals. The existing shelters are inadequate, leaving thousands vulnerable to the elements.

As the region grapples with the aftermath of the storm, calls have intensified for increased aid and resources to support the affected population. Despite ongoing challenges, efforts are underway to provide essential supplies and assistance to those in need. The situation in Gaza remains precarious, with the need for sustained support and collaboration to address the pressing humanitarian crisis.
