Lindsay Davies, a resident of Niagara, strongly disagrees with the misconception that Ontario lacks exciting outdoor activities. In an interview with CBC’s Fresh Air, Davies highlighted that there are 36 exceptional places in the province for outdoor adventures. Her newly released book, “Greenbelt Trails: The 36 best – west of Toronto, from Oakville and Hamilton to Niagara and beyond,” showcases numerous hiking locations in southwest Ontario that hold personal significance for her.
Initially not an enthusiastic hiker, Davies found solace in exploring the nearby Greenbelt trails when she moved back in with her parents. Her exploration journey, shared through social media and articles, eventually led to the opportunity to write a book when a publisher discovered her online content.
As research, such as a recent study from MacMaster University in Hamilton, emphasizes the health benefits of walking, Davies aimed to inspire others to stay active. Julie Richardson, a professor at MacMaster, stressed the importance of regular walking for overall health.
Davies believes that apart from physical benefits, immersing oneself in nature contributes significantly to mental well-being. Her book aims to make hiking accessible to a broad audience, including beginners, by featuring beginner-friendly trails and emphasizing safety measures like hiking in pairs.
She particularly recommends the Hendrie Valley Trails in the Royal Botanical Gardens in Burlington as an easy and enjoyable outdoor experience. Davies advises against hiking alone, emphasizing the importance of informing someone about one’s hiking plans even for experienced hikers.
