Hulu has decided to cancel the reboot of the classic TV series “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” as revealed by Sarah Michelle Gellar, the original show’s lead, in an Instagram update over the weekend. Gellar mentioned that Hulu opted not to proceed with the project. The pilot for the new version titled “Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale” was shot with Ryan Kiera Armstrong, 16, portraying the next vampire slayer in the series.

The original show, known for its portrayal of a group of youngsters combating vampires and supernatural entities in the fictional town of Sunnydale, California, was groundbreaking in its approach to television storytelling. Celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2017, cultural critics highlighted the show’s impact on television production, lauding its intricate storylines and well-developed characters set against modern societal concerns and tensions.

Expressing gratitude to Chloe Zhao, the Oscar-winning filmmaker set to revive the series, Gellar shared her appreciation in the post. She expressed surprise at revisiting the character of Buffy and emphasized the character’s significance not only to her but also to the show’s fans.

Gellar assured fans that despite the cancellation, her appreciation for Buffy and the fans remains unchanged, humorously mentioning that they can still reach out to her in case of an apocalypse. Hulu has not provided any immediate comments in response to inquiries from CBC News.
