Instagram is introducing new paid features for users who are interested in upgrading their experience. The platform is currently testing an Instagram Plus subscription service that offers various benefits for a monthly fee. Subscribers can prolong the visibility of their story posts, showcase their stories at the forefront of their followers’ feeds, and track the number of story replays. Additionally, subscribers gain the ability to clandestinely view other users’ stories and create multiple friend lists to control story visibility.
This move reflects a broader industry trend away from universally free services towards tiered subscription models. Financial planner and newsletter author Hanna Horvath noted the prevalence of subscription-based pricing models across various sectors, attributing it to the “tierification of everything.” Companies are increasingly offering paid tiers with enhanced features while potentially downgrading the free or lower-cost options.
Meta has not disclosed the specific locations where Instagram Plus is being tested, but users in Mexico, Japan, and the Philippines have shared screenshots of the new features. The subscription service appears to cost around $3 Canadian dollars per month in Mexico. This initiative follows the lead of other platforms like LinkedIn and various dating apps that have incorporated premium subscription tiers.
The introduction of paid features on social media platforms is not unique to Instagram. For instance, Elon Musk implemented paid subscriptions on Twitter and rebranded the platform as X in 2022. Snapchat also announced Snapchat+, providing exclusive features for paid users. Meta is exploring paid options not only for Instagram but also for Facebook and WhatsApp.
According to financial expert Hanna Horvath, companies may prioritize catering to higher-income consumers who are willing to pay for premium services, potentially overlooking price-sensitive users. Brett Caraway, from the University of Toronto, highlighted the potential success of Instagram Plus in attracting highly engaged users seeking enhanced visibility on the platform. However, he cautioned that certain features, such as secret story viewing, could lead to feelings of alienation among non-paying users.
As platform owners seek to balance user satisfaction, advertising revenue, and revenue diversification, the trend towards paid features continues to grow. This shift is driven by the desire to supplement income from targeted ads and data mining while avoiding an overwhelming influx of commercial messages that can detract from the user experience.
The evolution towards paid features reflects a broader shift in consumer preferences, with some users expressing nostalgia for simpler subscription models akin to traditional cable television. As viewers increasingly value ad-free experiences, paid services are becoming more appealing, signaling a shift in how users engage with online platforms.
