“Parks Canada Warns Against Ski Jumping Over Rideau Canal”

Share

Parks Canada has issued a warning requesting individuals to refrain from ski jumping over the Rideau Canal following a viral video featuring a member of a stunt group attempting the risky maneuver. The heart-stopping stunt is showcased at the beginning of a 22-minute video released by The Jetskis on YouTube last Christmas Eve. The video captures 21-year-old Tai How skiing through the trees near Parliament Hill in Ottawa, launching off a snow ramp, and crossing a 9.7-meter gap before crash-landing on the opposite side without a helmet.

In response to the stunt, Parks Canada, the federal agency overseeing the historic Rideau Canal and its locks, released a public safety notice cautioning against unauthorized activities like ski jumping in the area. The agency emphasized increased enforcement with potential fines for violations. Tai How, currently in Nelson, B.C., recounted performing the stunt last February during a visit to Ottawa from Montreal where he resides and is part of The Jetskis crew.

Local authorities expressed concerns about potential copycat attempts following the video’s popularity on social media. Benjamin Gales, Parks Canada’s visitor services manager for the Rideau Canal, warned against re-attempting the dangerous stunt, highlighting potential fines of up to $10,000 for trespassing. Ottawa Paramedic Service’s Marc-Antoine Deschamps labeled the jump as extremely perilous, citing risks of severe injuries such as broken bones, neck and back injuries, and head trauma.

Had Tai How missed his landing and sustained serious injuries, a complex rescue operation involving specialized units would have been necessary. Despite acknowledging the risks involved, How defended his passion for extreme sports, emphasizing the importance of pushing boundaries while advocating for caution. He encouraged individuals to challenge themselves within their skill level and exercise care when attempting daring stunts.
