Sidney Crosby paid tribute to former NHL player Lowell MacDonald, a fellow Nova Scotian who passed away recently. Crosby expressed how MacDonald, a two-time NHL all-star who played for teams like the Detroit Red Wings, Los Angeles Kings, and Pittsburgh Penguins, had been an inspiration to him. MacDonald, born in Thorburn, N.S., always held a special place for his home province.

MacDonald, who concluded his NHL career with 180 goals and 390 points in 506 games, was also known for his dedication to education. During his NHL days, he pursued higher education during summers, earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees. After retiring from hockey, MacDonald transitioned into teaching and coaching at the University School of Milwaukee for nearly 20 years.

Bruce Rainnie, president of the Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame, recalled his positive interactions with MacDonald, describing him as a remarkable individual. Despite facing knee injuries throughout his career, MacDonald’s resilience and passion for the sport led him to success. He even won the Bill Masterson Memorial Trophy for his exceptional sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.

Rainnie emphasized MacDonald’s induction into the Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame as a testament to his hard work and determination. A celebration of MacDonald’s life is planned for this summer in Little Harbour, where he and his wife would often return to visit family.
