“Snowstorm Shuts Down Rural Schools in Thunder Bay”

Rural schools in Thunder Bay, Ontario, are shut down today due to heavy snowfall overnight. Additionally, some school bus routes are canceled, while city routes may experience delays because of the road conditions. Lakehead Public Schools have closed several rural schools, including Crestview, Five Mile, Gorham Ware, McKenzie, Nor’wester View, Kakabeka, Valley Central, and Whitefish Valley schools, due to the weather conditions. However, public board city schools remain open in Thunder Bay, along with the Thunder Bay Catholic Board, French Catholic, and French public schools. City school buses are operating as usual.

The Northwestern Ontario Student Services Consortium has reported some school bus delays and cancellations in Kenora and Sioux. For more information, visit the consortium’s website. The City of Thunder Bay reported that approximately 15 cm of snow fell overnight, leading to drifting in various areas across the city due to strong winds. Road crews started clearing priority routes, such as arterial, collector, and transit corridors, at 2 a.m. The plowing of residential streets will commence once the priority routes are cleared and is expected to be completed by Wednesday’s end. Sidewalk clearing on arterial, collector, and core-area streets started at 3 a.m. and is projected to finish by the end of the day. Residential sidewalks and trails will be addressed once priority areas are cleared and are anticipated to be finished by Thursday’s end.

Sanding and salting operations began at 5 p.m. on Sunday and continued through the night. Residential streets will be sanded once all priority routes are cleared. For real-time snow removal updates, visit the city website.
